I had a conversation today that reminded me of how so many homebuyers leave thousands of dollars on the table because they wait to shop for a home until the holidays are over.
I was at a broker’s open and discussing the market with the listing agent. He was frustrated because he had very motivated sellers, and several buyers had expressed interest in the house, but were waiting to take action until after the holidays. Those buyers had an opportunity to save a lot of money because of the seller’s urgency.
The number of homes sold always drops over the holidays and then starts ramping up after the New Year. Buyers get so busy with their shopping and holiday planning that they put their home shopping on hold. Fewer buyers means less competition and fewer competing offers. Competing offers can add thousands of dollars to the cost of a home.
Meanwhile the sellers with the strongest motivation keep their houses on the market. These are sellers who have to sell. This motivation can make it much easier to negotiate favorable terms.
So rather than spending all of your time fighting the crowds at the mall, you could take advantage of the opportunities in the housing market. What better gift than a HOME for the holidays?
